The Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (Musco) has urged Savings and Credit Cooperatives (Saccos) to develop gender policies to provide equal opportunities to both women and men in the workplace.
Opening a two-day Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN) – Malawi Sister Society Conference in Salima, Musco Head of Cooperatives and Projects Leroy Banda further encouraged women to work hard and upgrade so that they rise through the ranks in their respective companies on merit.
He said: “Some have the policies, but there is still a need to revise them in line with the current situation. Women have potential, but they are not given the space and opportunity, and the nation is losing out.”
In her keynote address, local entrepreneur Towera Jalakasi encouraged women to support each other to grow both in business and career-wise.
GWLN Malawi sister society is a grouping that aims at advancing women in leadership and providing a platform for females working with Saccos in the country to network and share experiences.
Among others, the network runs a women’s mentorship program, offers scholarships to needy students, and makes donations to various underprivileged communities such as hospitals, schools, and prisons.
This year’s theme for the conference is Empowered Woman: Breaking Barriers.
